What is Haemochromatosis ?
Haemochromatosis is a hereditary condition, in which excessive amounts of iron are absorbed from the diet. This iron is deposited in various organs, mainly the liver and also in the pancreas, heart and joints. Iron is essential for growth and development.
The liver stores iron. It is essential for providing new blood cells with iron for health.
We take in a small amount of iron from our diet, enough to balance any loss.
The body has no way of disposing of any excess iron. When excess quantities of Iron are stored in the liver it becomes enlarged and deposits iron in the pancreas, heart and joints cause damage to the tissue of these organs.
